A double is something else than an image.
It is not a “natural” object, but neither is it a mental product.
That is to say:
Not an imitation of a real object,
Neither an illusion of the mind,
Nor a creation of the thought.
The double is a reality that is exterior to the subject that, in its appearance is opposed by its unusual nature to familiar objects, to the ordinary decor of life. It plays in two contrasted parts in the same time :
In the moment where it shows itself present,
It reveals itself as being from here,
As belonging to an inaccessible elsewhere.
A presence and an absence in the same time.
